• Humpty’s Family Restaurant
    42148 Highway 1 W
    Calgary AB  T3Z 2P2
    Phone: 403 932 9353

This Humpty’s Restaurant is not really in Calgary, if you ask me. You find it on Highway 1, just after the exit to Bragg Creek and Cochrane, connected to the Petro Canada gas station.

After a past visit to a Humpty’s in Calgary, I was hesitant to visit another one, but as you’ll read, this one is much better than the previous one.

You can get to the Highway 1 Humpty’s from either side of the highway - just use the Highway 22X overpass.

On entering Humpty’s you’ll notice a wall full of awards for service and food. Of course, this raised my expectations. One server promptly escorted us to a table, and another server asked if we wanted coffee. What a good start.

The ambiance is average. It is a typical family restaurant/diner, but the space was planned in a strange way, making the restaurant feel cramped. Our booth by the window did offer a nice view of the highway.

Humpty’s just updated their menu, and wow! It has a lot of options that are worth a try.

After much fun deliberation, we finally ordered. I got an M&M Burger (comes with mushrooms and mozzarella cheese), and my friend went for the Meatloaf.

Our food came after a reasonable time and looked very good.

My fries were perfectly crisp and especially tasty. I felt like I was eating something much fancier than potato sticks.

The burger was covered with mushrooms and the mozzarella cheese was melted on top of them. There was fresh lettuce, tomato, and onions on the side. I had said yes to mustard and relish, and these condiments were on the bottom.

The patty was a good size but lacked flavor on its own. The beef itself would have been disappointing, but with the add-ons it made a tasty burger. The patty came in a fresh sesame-seed bun.

The meatloaf was not moist and sliced like the traditional version. At Humpty’s, it was square-shaped beef patties, served with vegetables and garlic bread. The meatloaf was firm and tasty - I could eat this on a bun as a burger. The vegetable were fresh and well seasoned. There were two slices of garlic Ciabatta bread, a great variation on the usual sliced bread.

Last thoughts: Visiting this Humpty’s Family Restaurant on Highway 1 was an eye-opener. It was so much better than my previous experience. The service was super, and the food was good and extremely filling. This is a location I would go back to.

  • White Spot Restaurant
    3322 32 St NE
    Calgary AB  T2E 8Z5
    Phone: 403 237 5100

While driving by the White Spot Restaurant in the northeast of Calgary, I became curious to try it out. It’s easy to find, right on the corner of Barlow Trail and 32nd Avenue, next to the Shaw building.

I got there around 7:30 pm on a Friday, and there was a good-size dinner crowd. I waited a bit, then a girl came but didn’t know where to put me, so she asked for help. I was seated at a table that had not been cleaned. This table was off to the side, between the entrance and the bar area. I still wonder why I was put there, when there was lots of space in the dining area.

Then the server came. She was way too antsy for my liking. She came back 3 times within 3 minutes to ask if I was ready to order. When I asked her to clean the table, she got someone else to do it.

One thing you’ll notice about the menu at White Spot is that the dishes all look alike, and there are not that many to begin with. Ultimately I ordered a burger, of course, and one that came with “endless fries”.

While waiting for the food I looked around. White Spot has a semi-upscale look, with lots of wood and a huge waterfall.

Then the food arrived. After the table was cleaned, nobody had thought of giving me cutlery. So I waved to a girl (my original server was nowhere to be found), and she became flustered with the simple request for cutlery. I got a napkin and a knife (yes, no fork!), but at least I got something.

Let’s start with the fries. They were awesome, some of the best fries I’ve eaten in a restaurant in Calgary. I ordered mayonnaise instead of gravy, and I got something that was not mayonnaise but was even better, and it went perfectly with the fries. My order of a Big Burger entitled me to endless fries. Trust me, you’ll want to get seconds at least. The burger had a good sauce and cooked tomatoes.

Our original server dropped off the bill the first chance she got. I gave her my credit card, and she came back with the slip. While I like to take a leisurely pace when dining out, this lady obviously did not agree. She was back for the slip before I could sign it.

Last thoughts: Although the fries were great, they won’t be enough to lure me back to White Spot. First, the menu is sparse. Second, plenty of other places offer much better service as well as value for money.

  • Applebee’s Calgary
    707-388 Country Hills Blvd
    Calgary AB  T3K 5J6
    Phone: 403 226 6160

Dinner one night found us at the charmingly named Applebee’s. Although Applebee’s is a very common chain restaurant in the U.S. and Canada, you’ll find only one location in Calgary.

The ambiance at Applebee’s is sports-dominated, with lots of decorations supporting local teams like the Stampeders and the Flames. One downside is that the place is kind of dark.

We got there, saw a line-up, and were told to expect a wait of 15-20 minutes. It was exactly that long before we got a table. Our server seemed nice at first, but that false impression soon fell apart. He just didn’t seem to care much. He forgot what we ordered and came back to get it a second time (this also happened to another table). On the bright side the food came quickly.

I got an order of pork ribs with fries. Let’s start with the fries: they were bad! They were doused in as much salt as a whole family would need for a month. They were half soggy and half hard (hard enough to break your teeth on). Then the ribs: they were coated nicely in BBQ sauce, but on their own they were way too dry. I’ve made ribs only once in my life, and that first try turned out ten times better than these Applebee’s ribs.

Last thoughts: My experience at chains like Applebee’s and Montana’s has not been good the last couple of months. In this case, Applebee’s is not going to see me back. Go someplace else - there’s no shortage of better places with better prices.

  • Hometown Kitchen & Bar
4068 Ogden Road SE (see map)
    Calgary AB  T2G 4P5
    Phone: 403 264 5735

Hometown Kitchen on Ogden Road is in the heart of the industrial area, which is probably where most of their customers come from.

Just outside the door are big signs advertising great food deals, but they’re not all current. Hometown Kitchen & Bar just changed hands, and the new owners are still working on the menu.

Inside, Hometown Kitchen & Bar looks like a school cafeteria. It’s clearly not concerned about ambiance - just about feeding hungry industrial workers. On our Saturday visit the weekday lunch crowd was missing, so we were the only patrons.

The service was all smiles and the new owners extremely attentive. Our food was ready in 10-15 minutes.

Unfortunately my order arrived before my friend’s order. This was disappointing, since other restaurants always serve me and my dining companions at the same time.

The food was pretty good. My steak sandwich with garlic toast and fries (only $3.95) looked great and also tasted good. It was a shame that all the seasoning on the steak was clumped in the center, but otherwise it was a pretty good cut of meat and cooked to the right doneness.

The wonton soup with BBQ pork (medium, $4.95) was more of a “large”. It had several slices of pork (quite tasty), small-ish wontons, and plenty of vegetables (mostly carrots). The broth was bland, though. Every scoop of soup needed a good shake of pepper.

Last thoughts: Hometown Kitchen & Bar is a stripped-down kind of place. You go there if you’re nearby and need to get something in your stomach. There is charm in the plainness, and the owners couldn’t be more earnest. Hometown Kitchen & Bar stays on my list because I’ve yet to find better dine-out prices in Calgary. If you’re curious to try, note that they’re closed on Sundays.

  • abc Country Restaurant
658-11520 24 St SE (see map)
    Calgary AB  T2Z 3EG
    Phone: 403 720 6637

On Easter Sunday we decided to try Calgary’s abc Country Restaurant for dinner. I didn’t really know where it was, so I called, and the gentleman on the phone was very helpful with directions.

Getting there is actually not difficult. Go south on Deerfoot Trail, take the 24th Street exit, then go east for less than a kilometer. abc Country Restaurant is on the right, just in front of Sobeys.

This Sunday the dinner “rush” was not one at all. When we arrived there were 3 tables occupied, and when we left we were the last ones. Sunday nights are normally busy, they said, but it was Easter Sunday.

Currently abc Country Restaurant is offering a Double Dinner Deal. That’s any 2 entrees (from a selection of 5) and one dessert for $22. The selection of entrees is small but has something for everyone: fish and chips, sirloin steak and mushrooms, chicken strips, quarter BBQ chicken, bacon cheddar steakburger.

We settled on the 1/4 BBQ chicken and the bacon cheddar steakburger. Being fans of sweet potato fries, we substituted them for the wedge fries for an extra $1.99.

Our table had a little sign informing us of the free wireless Internet. You need to ask your server for the password. The Internet access worked like a charm and was a nice bonus.

Our food was served in a timely matter and looked good.

The burger was nice and juicy - just the way I like it - and the cheese and bacon completed the taste package. The bun was fresh and tasty.

The BBQ chicken was good, but there was a bit too much sauce and the BBQ flavor overwhelmed the taste of the meat.

The sweet potato fries came with mayonnaise, a good companion. The fries could have been crispier, but they did taste great.

After devouring the entrees we were salivating for dessert. Believe me, it was goooood. It was much bigger than the picture can show. The brownie was fresh and delicious with vanilla ice cream and 5 mounds of whipped cream. The cook even added 2 pink marshmallow bunnies in honor of Easter. The hot fudge Mount Baker is normally $6.49, so the Double Dinner Deal for $22 is truly great value for money.

The service was great! The staff working at abc Country Restaurant were all good at their jobs and beyond friendly. Even when there was a little misunderstanding about a salad, it was resolved in the blink of an eye.

The ambiance was fresh and warm. Thoughtful decor accents like a miniature lamp at each table and nice art pieces on the walls serve to make you feel at home. There is a mix of booths and tables, so there is a seating arrangement for everyone.

Last thoughts: abc Country Restaurant in Calgary is now officially on the list of places I like. Being in the southeast, it is a little out of my way, but I’ll find a reason to go back and try their other menu items. It’s a great place for a relaxed meal with family and friends!

  • Inglewood Drive Inn
    802 12 St NE
    Calgary AB  T2G 3H5
    Phone: 403 265 5198

The Inglewood Drive Inn had first caught my eye while I was shopping in this Calgary neighborhood last summer. It’s housed in a humble shack on 12th Street SE, the street that takes you from the Calgary Zoo to the Inglewood area.

Both outside and inside, this restaurant could use some updating. It looks old and shabby. The washrooms, though clean, literally have paint peeling off the walls. Overall, the Inglewood Drive Inn feels plain and devoid of ambiance. It does have a good amount of seating.

Our server was friendly and gave us time to mull over the menu board above the counter. There’s an extensive selection of sandwiches, burgers, sides, shakes, breakfasts, and dinners, so making up your mind can be a challenge.

After ordering you pay at the counter, and this place only takes cash or debit (no credit cards). The food was brought out in about 10 minutes. It was all served on Styrofoam plates, to my chagrin. Paper is okay, but Styrofoam is terrible. I don’t see why the food can’t be served on reusable (not disposable) dishes for customers dining in. It would be much better for the planet and probably cheaper in the long run.

The food was good. My double cheeseburger (only $2.82) was big. The patty was processed rather than homemade, but it was still tasty. My maple milkshake was quite delicious - I would go back for that. My friend got a salmon salad sandwich that she wouldn’t recommend. Think chicken salad but made with canned salmon, which she has made herself with better success than the Inglewood Drive Inn. She should probably have ordered the fish burger instead.

Last thoughts: The Inglewood Drive Inn could get a repeat visit from me, primarily for the milkshakes. The food is good but not “wow”. The place could use some sprucing up and the heater could be set a couple of degrees warmer. If you’re planning to go, note that they are closed on Sundays and only open until 6:30 pm Monday to Saturday.

  • Sun’s BBQ Restaurant (Sun Chiu Kee)
    6-1423 Centre St NW
    Calgary AB  T2E 2R8
    Phone: 403 230 8890

I’d been craving Chinese food, so on driving by Sun’s BBQ Restaurant my friend and I agreed to investigate what they might have to offer.

Sun’s BBQ is connected to the Chinese supermarket Lambda on Centre Street, just south of Highway 1 on 14th Avenue NW.

The restaurant’s exterior gives a good first impression that goes out the window as soon as you step inside. Yes, the booths and tables are reasonably pleasant, but the dining room’s ready view into the kitchen makes the place feel messy and chaotic.

On our visit there were several wait staffers roaming the mid-sized restaurant, but somehow it was still difficult to get any single one’s attention. Their demeanor was not friendly and their communication abilities were limited.

The food arrived quickly, but it did not have the authentic Chinese-ness that we’d been craving. Again we had been misled by the facade of Sun Chiu Kee, which leads one to imagine a kitchen that knows how to prepare real Chinese fare. Our food tasted like the efforts of someone trying to duplicate a Chinese dish recipe for the first time.

One thing that really bothered me were the abysmal washrooms. The restaurant shares one men’s and one women’s bathroom with Lambda Supermarket. These are often busy and very, very dirty.

And we’re still wondering about the leftovers. We only ate a quarter of the hot-and-sour soup, so we asked for the rest to be packed up. The doggie bag came back with visibly less soup. I really hope they didn’t use some of our leftovers for someone else’s order.

Last thoughts: I tried Sun’s BBQ Restaurant once, and you’ll never see me there again. I would bet that any other Chinese restaurant in Calgary will have better (and likely cheaper) Chinese food.

    Calgary AB  T2E 8R7
    Phone: 403 242 7427

When I get a hankering for ribs or steaks, I always think of Tony Roma’s. On one such occasion, I made a beeline for the Tony Roma’s restaurant in northeast Calgary. It’s visibly situated on Barlow Trail, between 32nd Avenue and 16th Avenue (Highway 1).

This Tony Roma’s has a classy-looking dining room with plenty of tables and booths. On our Tuesday visit it was packed, but we were still seated right away.

Tuesday is all-you-can-eat-ribs night: all the pork ribs and beef ribs you can chow down for $21.99 per person. Tony Roma’s brags about being “famous for ribs”, and this claim is not unfounded. Tony Roma’s ribs never disappoint.

Service, however, can be hit-or-miss. On this night we were not so lucky with our server. She did her job but we were often ignored. Later she apologized and said she wasn’t feeling well. At least she was aware that the service should have been better.

Last thoughts: Tony Roma’s is the place for meat-lovers. I love their ribs and they also do great steaks. The Tony Roma’s in northeast Calgary will be getting more visits from me. The whole package is just right at this Tony Roma’s location.

  • Toad ‘N’ Turtle Pubhouse & Grill
    2475 27 Ave NE
    Calgary AB T2E 8M1
    Phone: 403 717 0670
The Toad ‘N’ Turtle on 27th Avenue is next to Barlow Trail just north of Highway 1. The ambiance is more than just your neighborhood pub - it’s elevated by tasteful decor infused with lots of wood, warm colors, and eye-catching knick-knacks. If you’re in the mood for distraction or not being able to hear your companions, this small-ish pub boasts no less than 7 TV screens and extremely loud music.

We dropped by the Toad ‘N’ Turtle on a Saturday evening around dinner time and were surprised to find it relatively empty. It turns out we were just early, because the place was buzzing by the time we left.

Service did not seem to be a priority at the Toad ‘N’ Turtle. It was 10 minutes before we were acknowledged by a server. Though our food didn’t take long, at the end of our meal the bill took more than twice as long to arrive.

Our server seemed intent on ignoring us as much as she could, such that I had to walk to the bar to ask for ketchup.

The food was okay. I ordered the bison burger, which wasn’t too bad. The bread was nice and the burger was tasty, though dry. I guess the cook at the Toad ‘N’ Turtle doesn’t share my preference for juicy burgers. My friend got the fisherman’s pie, which the menu likened to shepherd’s pie, but made with seafood instead of ground beef. In reality it was more like fisherman’s soup. Everything under the mashed potato topping was swimming in sauce. The saving grace of this meal were the sweet potato fries, which must be some of the best in Calgary.

Toad ‘N’ Turtle Pubhouse & Grill offers WiFi Internet, but it’s free only for the first 20 minutes (and slower than normal, too). After that it’s $2.50 a day or $5.00 a week, a bit steep if you ask me. I believe pub patrons would use WiFi just to quickly check something online, like e-mail, so the WiFi access should be free like it is in most WiFi-enabled establishments nowadays.

Last thoughts: I’m not itching to pay the Toad ‘N’ Turtle another visit. The service bordered on rude and the place was way too noisy. But maybe - just maybe - I would go back for the sweet potato fries.

  • Chili’s Texas Grill
1632 14 Ave NW (see map)
    Calgary AB  T2N 1M7
    Phone: 403 210 2438

We went for dinner at Chili’s Restaurant adjacent to the North Hill Shopping Centre in Calgary.

Things became awkward as soon as we entered. The hostess seemed a bit “out of it”. We asked for a window booth, and we could see that 4 of them were empty. She led us to the only one that had not been cleared (the other 3 were clean), and we had to wait while she got it ready.

After a couple of minutes we settled down to perusing the menu. Our server showed up shortly after, took our drinks, and brought them soon after. At this point we asked for a bit more time, since the menu was extensive and not that well organized. We did get more time, too much if you ask me.

But eventually our order was taken and the food arrived quickly. I got the Oldtimer Burger, which was nothing special, and the meat did not make me long for more. The patty tasted like it was cooked from frozen and came from a supermarket package. My friend ordered the Terlingua Chili, described on the menu as their “signature chili with tender chunks of beef slow-cooked with onions, peppers & chilies”. Well, there was no hint of any chilies whatsoever. Chili’s chili was bland and lukewarm, extremely disappointing for a dish that should be piping hot and have some kick.

According to the menu, every Chili’s Restaurant has an upside-down picture. The ladies will have a hard time finding it at the North Hill location. (It was hanging in the men’s washroom.)

Last thoughts: I’m not going back to Chili’s Texas Grill. Neither the food nor the service is worth a repeat visit. Calgary has plenty of restaurants that serve much better food in the same price range.
