After a walk through Calgary’s downtown East Village, our stomachs started to demand food. Having heard of Le Chien Chaud and realizing that it wasn’t much farther, we headed towards Uptown 17th Avenue. Le Chien Chaud is on business-dense 4th Street SW just after 20th Avenue, across from the Petro-Canada gas station.

The outside of Le Chien Chaud looks like the average storefront and doesn’t stand out much. The inside, however, is a different story. The tiny space is decorated in retro style, with a black-and-white checkered floor, red walls, and chrome furniture. There’s even an old-fashioned street lamp and a little red cart of condiments and toppings. Across from these is a wall paying homage to the almighty hot dog. We spotted The Mona Lisa clutching a hot-dog bun, an Oscar Meyer wiener ad, and a toddler’s hot-dog costume.

Le Chien Chaud just barely fits in 6 tables, each seating 4 or less. We had to wait for a table on this busy Saturday afternoon.

There’s an extensive menu of gourmet hot dogs: Breakfast Dog (available all day), Canadian Dog, Chicago Dog, Chilean Completo Dog, Coney Island Dog, French Dog, German Dog, Italian Dog, Kids Dog (12 and under), Mediterranean Dog, Mexican Dog, San Antonio Black Bean Chili Dog, and Ukrainian Dog.

At the counter, you order any of the above with your choice of wiener: the signature blend Pork/Beef, All-Beef, Vegetarian, Buffalo, or Pork Bratwurst. These range in price from $5.45 to $6.50.

Then you grab a table and wait until they call your order. The hot dogs are served on checkered wax paper in a red plastic basket. The wieners themselves are hefty, about 1 inch thick and more than half a foot long.

I had the Italian Dog with All-Beef wiener. The Italian comes with garlic butter, bruschetta, sharp asiago cheese, and sweet fresh basil. When it arrived the bread was soaking. My first bite was a bad surprise - I hadn’t expected the toppings to be cold. The cheese was almost frozen! This combined badly with the all-beef wiener, which was piping hot and extremely greasy. I can’t remember biting into a greasier hot dog in my life. The bun was not fresh and - with a wet bottom - really disappointed the bread lover in me.

My friend had the Mediterranean Dog with Buffalo wiener. The Mediterranean comes with roasted red pepper hummous, artichoke hearts, tangy olives, herbed feta cheese and fresh parsley. The wiener is made from free-roaming buffalo. Though indistinguishable in taste from the all-beef wiener, it was much leaner. The toppings were also cold and the combination lackluster.

The lone bathroom continues the wiener obsession with hot dog quotes and trivia (and has a sensor-activated trash can).

Last thoughts: I was really curious to try Le Chien Chaud, but I left unimpressed. Their array of “gourmet” hot dogs sounds intriguing at first, but the actual creations are nothing special. I had a much more memorable experience at Tubby Dog (also in Calgary’s Uptown district). Tubby Dog’s hot dog creations cost a bit more but were a real treat to eat. Despite the nice atmosphere at Le Chien Chaud, I have no desire to go back for the food.

  • Boogie’s Burgers
    A-908 Edmonton Trail NE
    Calgary AB  T2E 3K1
    Phone: 403 230 7070
    www.boogiesburgers.com

Boogie’s Burgers is one of those places in Calgary that serve good fast food without being a chain. Boogie’s dates back to 1969, when it was started by the guy who also started the famed Peter’s Drive-In.

How do you get to Boogie’s? If you’re coming from Highway 1, just go down (south) on Edmonton Trail. Just after 9th Avenue, you’ll spot Boogie’s on the left in a tiny strip mall. If you’re craving a good burger on a Sunday, then you’re out of luck because they will be closed.

The ambiance at Boogie’s hints at retro, with a bar and video-game tables. You can play an old-fashioned video game while chowing down. The music was loud but still acceptable to most of us.

At Boogie’s you build a burger with the add-ons and toppings you love. If you want 4 patties, then go for it, and if you like pineapple or banana peppers, by all means add them.

So you can get a plain burger (the one I like), or you can make something really special. If inspiration is lacking, you can select one that someone else has built (and named after the creator) before you.

Don’t feel like meat? You don’t have to miss out - Boogie’s also has a Veggie Patty.

Aside from burgers, the menu offers hot dogs or chicken sandwiches.

For the side, choose from Fries, Spicy Fries, Onion Rings, or Yam Fries (which look more like chips).

And how does everything taste? The burgers are so good that you never want to finish or leave, and the Yam Fries are the perfect side. You will leave Boogie’s with a satisfied feeling that you’ll never get from a fast-food chain.

Last thoughts: The question is not if I will go back, but when. Cool ambiance, tasty food. The service could be better, but they are busy. Don’t waste your money on fast food from a big chain when Calgary has Boogie’s.

  • Banzai Sushi & Teriyaki House
    526A 4 Ave SW
    Calgary AB  T2P 0J6
    Phone: 403 262 9060

We had just seen a Sunday matinee movie and were famished. On our way home we walked by Banzai Restaurant on 4th Avenue in downtown Calgary.

We decided to stop for a bite to eat.

On entering Banzai Sushi & Teriyaki House you find a fresh environment with great ambiance and decor. On this Sunday afternoon it was not particularly busy, but I think weekdays at lunch time would be a much different story.

Banzai is best described as a Japanese fast-food restaurant. We each ordered a Bento Box (described as a “lunch box” but apparently available all day). The counter lady bade us to take a table then later brought our order.

Each Bento Box ($8.25) came with miso soup, two spring rolls, rice, salad, and two “entrees”. Mine were beef and chicken. Both types of meat were cooked to perfection and topped with teriyaki sauce; the chicken was accompanied by shredded cabbage. The folks at Banzai know their marinades, because the beef and chicken had great flavor. The spring rolls were small and skimpy on filling, but they were crispy and tastily greasy.

My friend’s entrees were California rolls (3 pieces) and tempura (2 shrimp, 1 yam, 1 cucumber, 2 mushrooms). The tempura was good and crisp, and the rolls were adequate.

Last thoughts: Going to Banzai Sushi & Teriyaki House is a quick way to quench your craving for Japanese. For a fast-food establishment, it really delivered on taste, service, and atmosphere. I wouldn’t mind going back.

  • A&W, Chinook Centre
    6455 MacLeod Trail SW
    Calgary AB
    Phone: 403 640 4127

While shopping at the Chinook Centre Mall in Calgary, we were overcome by hunger and we made a beeline for the A&W in the food court.

A&W is one of the first food places in the food court. At 5:30 pm on a Thursday it was not busy. We asked for two Mama burgers, one with fries and Coke, and one with onion rings and the famous A&W Root Beer.

Our food was ready in a pinch, and we settled into a nice table next to the escalator, with a great view of people going up and down.

The Mama burgers were good, as per usual at A&W Restaurants. The fries were also good and crispy. Unfortunately, the root beer was warm. Even A&W root beer tastes awful when not properly chilled.

On first sight the onion rings looked pale, and on first bite they looked even paler and tasted uncooked. I took them back. The server insisted that white onions are supposed to look pale, but eventually he offered me a new bag of onion rings. This new batch of onion rings - supposedly cooked for the same length of time - was brown and crispy, as they should have been.

Last thoughts: Food-court food is never my favorite. Even the fast-food chains seem to slack off at food courts. I give a thumbs-down to this A&W. They replaced my onion rings, but not without an argument and making me feel like I was wrong to complain.

  • Little Caesars Pizza
    728 Northmount Dr NW
    Calgary AB  T2K 3K2
    Phone: 403 284 5254

When you want a pizza and you want it right now, then Little Caesars is a great bet. My pizza craving led me to the Little Caesars in northwest Calgary.

To get there, just go north on 10th Street NW. You’ll find Little Caesars just where 10th Street becomes Northmount Drive.

Pizzas are always hot and ready (no waiting!) at this Little Caesars, and they’re cheap! You can get a Pepperoni Pizza for just $5, and it’s certainly big enough for a meal.

Little Caesars is not a sit-down restaurant. It’s just a pick-up counter where you order for taking out.

The staff are friendly and know what they’re doing. I got a Hawaiian Pizza ($7), which was hot and tasty.

If you want to spruce up your takeout dinner, Little Caesars also has dips, drinks, and their famous Crazy Bread.

Last thoughts: Little Caesars is always my first choice for takeout pizza. Their prices are better than most pizza places in town, and I don’t have to wait for the delivery guy.

  • A&W #1323
    422 McKnight Blvd NE
    Calgary AB  T2K 6A6
    Phone: 403 271 6552

On a recent Saturday, I decided to drop into A&W for a dinner break between running errands. It was 7:30 pm, and the only other customers were seated at two tables.

It was some time before the server noticed me - he was busy cleaning the floors. He washed his hands, then proceeded to take my order with the best efficiency I’ve observed at an A&W Restaurant.

This A&W is right between Deerfoot Trail and Centre Street, basically on the corner of Edmonton Trail. It was clean and pleasant, and I spotted some newspapers for customers to read.

My Mama Burger, fries, and root beer were ready in a pinch. The fries were hot and still glistening with oil. I don’t see that often at A&W, which means that these were fresh off the fryer.

The burger was also hot and fresh. It seemed to have more onions than usual, but the taste was right.

Last thoughts: This A&W is not very busy, which is nice if you’re looking for a place to wind down. It’s easy to reach from the main traffic routes, and the staff are well trained. This A&W will stay on the list of the locations I like.

  • McDonald’s, Shepard Crossing
    109-522 130 Ave SE
    Calgary AB  T2Z 0G4
    Phone: 403 221 7599

This McDonald’s restaurant is just a bit inside the 130th Avenue SE area, across the street from Safeway and close to Home Depot.

This McDonald’s looks quite fancy. It has a fireplace, leather chairs, and nice booths. There is a PlayPlace for kids housed in a separate room.

They did make one big mistake with this McDonald’s. There is almost no room between the entrance and the counter, so at lunch time the line backs up all the way outside. McDonald’s should have planned for more space to contain the lunch crowd.

Staff here does not appear to be the smartest, which leads to longer waits than you’d expect at McDonald’s. Lucky for us, the food quality does not suffer.

Last thoughts: This McDonald’s has good food and an almost classy ambience. However, do I really want to wait in that line? I think that will depend on what time I get there.

    Calgary AB  T1Y 7J9

Next to Barlow Trail, just south of McKnight Boulevard, you’ll find this A&W Express. I wonder how an A&W Express is different from a “normal” A&W?

This A&W has a nice layout with enough seating and probably a bit more privacy than most other fast-food restaurants. The decor, as with any A&W, has lots of orange, which really cheers you up.

The lady who served me was very friendly and helpful. My Teen Burgers were ready in no time.

I have no complaints about the taste, but the patty was not hot enough. It was just warm-ish, such that the cheese on top did not even melt.

Last thoughts: This A&W Express has a great location with lots of parking, and it’s just minutes away from the Calgary International Airport. Too bad I was turned off by the lukewarm beef patty. Next time I wouldn’t avoid this place, but I would consider other food outlets first.

  • Harveys, Signal Hill
    5658 Signal Hill Centre SW
    Calgary AB  T3H 3P8
    Phone: 403 240 0006

Searching for a quick meal brought us to this Harvey’s Restaurant. You can find this Harvey’s right next to Swiss Chalet, with whom they actually share the front door and washrooms.

Going for dinner could be a bit tricky. The door sign indicated that Harvey’s Signal Hill closes at 7 pm, which could be too early to accommodate a dinner rush.

At the counter, you can either order food from Harvey’s or takeout from Swiss Chalet. I guess they have the same owner.

The staff are friendly but easily flustered. They served us quickly, but the process felt ad hoc, as if it was everyone’s first day on the job.

The ambiance was so-so. The dining area consisted of loose tables and chairs, which deprived the restaurant of a homey feel. There were flower baskets hanging from the ceiling, but the ceiling is low, so watch your head if you’re 6 feet or over.

The burgers lived up to our expectations from Harvey’s.

Last thought: Would I go back to the Harvey’s in Signal Hill?  I don’t think so. Though the food was good, the rest was meh. I might be lured back by a really strong craving for Harvey’s, but I don’t get that often.

  • Wendy’s, Brentwood
    4122 Brentwood Rd NW
    Calgary AB  T2L 1K8
    Phone: 403 282 5216

Wendy’s Brentwood is hard to miss. It’s between the KFC and the Calgary Co-op gas station, just a couple of meters from the CTrain overpass.

Our visit to Wendy’s was on a weekday around 8 pm, and we found it kind of empty. There was one other person eating, and two more came in while we were there.

The main reason for our visit was to get some extra food in our system, because we were still hungry after a too-small dinner. So we chose from the Value Menu, and the Stack Attack looked like a good stomach filler.

Our order was taken efficiently, and the food was ready in a couple of minutes.

The ambiance at this Wendy’s is nice but a bit dated. There are some small booths but mainly tables and chairs.

The washrooms were not very clean. The men’s washroom was a wet and smelly place that I couldn’t wait to get out of. Let’s hope this is not always the case.

Last thoughts: Visiting this Wendy’s left me with a satisfied feeling. Maybe it was just the good-tasting burger, but I think it could be more. I may be going back, in which case I’ll let you know how it goes.
