On Easter Sunday we decided to try Calgary’s abc Country Restaurant for dinner. I didn’t really know where it was, so I called, and the gentleman on the phone was very helpful with directions.
Getting there is actually not difficult. Go south on Deerfoot Trail, take the 24th Street exit, then go east for less than a kilometer. abc Country Restaurant is on the right, just in front of Sobeys.
This Sunday the dinner “rush” was not one at all. When we arrived there were 3 tables occupied, and when we left we were the last ones. Sunday nights are normally busy, they said, but it was Easter Sunday.
Currently abc Country Restaurant is offering a Double Dinner Deal. That’s any 2 entrees (from a selection of 5) and one dessert for $22. The selection of entrees is small but has something for everyone: fish and chips, sirloin steak and mushrooms, chicken strips, quarter BBQ chicken, bacon cheddar steakburger.
We settled on the 1/4 BBQ chicken and the bacon cheddar steakburger. Being fans of sweet potato fries, we substituted them for the wedge fries for an extra $1.99.
Our table had a little sign informing us of the free wireless Internet. You need to ask your server for the password. The Internet access worked like a charm and was a nice bonus.
Our food was served in a timely matter and looked good.
The burger was nice and juicy – just the way I like it – and the cheese and bacon completed the taste package. The bun was fresh and tasty.
The BBQ chicken was good, but there was a bit too much sauce and the BBQ flavor overwhelmed the taste of the meat.
The sweet potato fries came with mayonnaise, a good companion. The fries could have been crispier, but they did taste great.
After devouring the entrees we were salivating for dessert. Believe me, it was goooood. It was much bigger than the picture can show. The brownie was fresh and delicious with vanilla ice cream and 5 mounds of whipped cream. The cook even added 2 pink marshmallow bunnies in honor of Easter. The hot fudge Mount Baker is normally $6.49, so the Double Dinner Deal for $22 is truly great value for money.
The service was great! The staff working at abc Country Restaurant were all good at their jobs and beyond friendly. Even when there was a little misunderstanding about a salad, it was resolved in the blink of an eye.
The ambiance was fresh and warm. Thoughtful decor accents like a miniature lamp at each table and nice art pieces on the walls serve to make you feel at home. There is a mix of booths and tables, so there is a seating arrangement for everyone.
Last thoughts: abc Country Restaurant in Calgary is now officially on the list of places I like. Being in the southeast, it is a little out of my way, but I’ll find a reason to go back and try their other menu items. It’s a great place for a relaxed meal with family and friends!
