Today - April 30, 2009 - was the second opening day of the second Fatburger in Calgary. In addition to Fatburger in the southeast, there is now a Fatburger in the northeast, almost right on the corner of 32nd Avenue and 36th Street.

This Fatburger Restaurant is everything you’d expect from a just-opened establishment. Everything looks fresh, clean, and brand-spanking-new. The dining area has booths hugging the walls and windows, and tables in the center.

The process is simple. You go to the till, pick your burger and toppings, pay, get a number for your order, and go wait at a table for 10 minutes (we were there at dinner time) for the food to come.

Fatburger is not cheap by any stretch. We ordered one combo meal and one burger (just the sandwich), and the total was over $18. It was steep for dining at what is essentially a fast-food joint. They want to erase the fast-food impression by selling beer. Well, then to me it’s just a fast-food place that sells beer.

The staff are extremely courteous and friendly, obviously well trained. At least one staff member is constantly patrolling the tables in case one needs to be cleared, to the point where it felt like an invasion of dining privacy.

Last thoughts: Fatburger is a nice place with good food and filling portions, but it’s a bit pricey for a burger and fries. I might consider this Fatburger the next time I’m hungry and nearby, but I’m equally likely to go to A&W or McDonald’s.

  • Bee Movie is an animated movie about bees and their humanized lives.

Bee Movie has a great cast, with the voices of Jerry Seinfeld and Renee Zellweger, among others.

Bee Movie starts when Barry B. Benson (Jerry Seinfeld) graduates and needs to find the job he wants to perform the rest of his bee life. Of course, Barry doesn’t feel like making that choice right away, so he decides to go out for a day with the high-flying Pollen Jocks when they go in search of nectar.

This decision gets Barry B. Benson into all kinds of trouble and he ends up breaking major bee laws, which state that bees can’t speak to humans. But Barry likes his new human friend and she likes him, so they spend a lot of time together. Eventually Barry finds out about how humans get their honey.

After this revelation, everything changes, and it almost ends with no food for humans, but for more about that you’ll have to watch Bee Movie.

Last thoughts: Bee Movie is fun but not up to the quality we expect from animated movies these days. It has a lot of semi-funny bee jokes, but someone like Jerry Seinfeld surely could have done better. The movie is not worth buying, but consider renting it or borrowing it from your library.

  • The NIMBY Store
    Main St (see map)
    Turner Valley AB
    Phone: 403 933 5186

The NIMBY Store in Turner Valley is the kind of store you need to check out at least once, not only because of the merchandise, but also because of the store, the staff, and the message.

Owner Cheryle Dobbyn started The NIMBY Store to support animal welfare. She gives 100% of her profits (after rent and utilities) to animal causes like the Pound Rescue.

Now back to the store…remember that everything you buy here is for the good of our animal friends!

You’ll find The Nimby right on Main Street in Turner Valley. You won’t miss it, since it kind of stands out.

As soon as you enter, you’re surrounded by secondhand and antique objects packed like sardines. At first, the amount of stuff filling the store feels overwhelming, but as you stroll through you sense a pattern by which things are grouped.

The Nimby houses all sorts of hidden pre-loved treasures, like clothes, furniture, books, toys, collectibles, and much much more. Books and children’s toys are free.

If you like birds, Cheryle keeps a big cage of feathered friends right in the store. On our visit we also met a dog who was enjoying his new life with Cheryle after having been neglected by his previous owners.

Visiting The Nimby can make a difference in the animal world and perhaps in yours. So go treasure-hunting, and better yet, bring along some nice things you no longer use that others may enjoy.

Last thoughts: Visiting a secondhand store is not a typical tourist activity, but why not? You may find just the thing you’re looking for at The NIMBY Store in Turner Valley. I will definitely pop in again the next time I drive through Turner Valley.

  • Thai Tai Vietnamese Sub
303 Centre St SW (see map)
    Calgary AB  T2E 1Y2
    Phone: 403 269 9380
    www.thaitaisub.com

Thai Tai is a chain of Vietnamese restaurants in Calgary. The one I visited is on Centre Street, in the heart of Calgary’s Chinatown.

Thai Tai has the ambiance of a modern eatery, with fresh decor and lots of natural light.

In food terms, Thai Tai offers a wide range of subs, soups, spring rolls, and more. I frequent this location of Thai Tai Sub for the Chicken Wings deal. After 5 pm, wings are 25 cents each Sunday to Thursday and 35 cents each Friday and Saturday, with the purchase of at least one bubble tea drink per party. It makes for a quick, tasty, and filling meal that’s light on the wallet.

The wings are in the top 3 of my favorite cheap wings in Calgary. They are served piping hot, crisp, and most times pretty big. There have been a couple of times when the wings were small-ish and the sauce not so great, but the track record at Thai Tai is good enough to make me a regular. Lately the wings are even served on a bed of shredded lettuce.

Thai Tai is also a pro at bubble tea. On my last visit I had the Raspberry Mango bubble tea, which was blended to perfection and tasted super.

The staff at Thai Tai are not warm and fuzzy, but they are polite and not averse to chatting briefly about the weather.

I do have some bones to pick with this Thai Tai restaurant. First, the food is always served in Styrofoam boxes, even when you’re eating in. If it’s not takeout, there’s no need to add another piece of nasty material to the landfills. How about a reusable plate or basket? Now, due to this choice of serving container, the garbage bins (small to begin with) are always overflowing with trash. The tables could use a good wipe-down, too. They’re often sticky from previous usage and cleaning neglect.

Finally - and admittedly this will be hard to change - Thai Tai does not have its own washrooms. The closest washrooms are in the little mall behind the restaurant. After getting the key, you need to walk all the way to the back of the mall.

Last thoughts: Thai Tai Vietnamese Sub on Centre Street is like a fast-food restaurant. I will keep going back because I’m a big fan of their wings and bubble tea, but the place really should be a lot cleaner.

  • Hometown Kitchen & Bar
4068 Ogden Road SE (see map)
    Calgary AB  T2G 4P5
    Phone: 403 264 5735

Hometown Kitchen on Ogden Road is in the heart of the industrial area, which is probably where most of their customers come from.

Just outside the door are big signs advertising great food deals, but they’re not all current. Hometown Kitchen & Bar just changed hands, and the new owners are still working on the menu.

Inside, Hometown Kitchen & Bar looks like a school cafeteria. It’s clearly not concerned about ambiance - just about feeding hungry industrial workers. On our Saturday visit the weekday lunch crowd was missing, so we were the only patrons.

The service was all smiles and the new owners extremely attentive. Our food was ready in 10-15 minutes.

Unfortunately my order arrived before my friend’s order. This was disappointing, since other restaurants always serve me and my dining companions at the same time.

The food was pretty good. My steak sandwich with garlic toast and fries (only $3.95) looked great and also tasted good. It was a shame that all the seasoning on the steak was clumped in the center, but otherwise it was a pretty good cut of meat and cooked to the right doneness.

The wonton soup with BBQ pork (medium, $4.95) was more of a “large”. It had several slices of pork (quite tasty), small-ish wontons, and plenty of vegetables (mostly carrots). The broth was bland, though. Every scoop of soup needed a good shake of pepper.

Last thoughts: Hometown Kitchen & Bar is a stripped-down kind of place. You go there if you’re nearby and need to get something in your stomach. There is charm in the plainness, and the owners couldn’t be more earnest. Hometown Kitchen & Bar stays on my list because I’ve yet to find better dine-out prices in Calgary. If you’re curious to try, note that they’re closed on Sundays.

  • abc Country Restaurant
658-11520 24 St SE (see map)
    Calgary AB  T2Z 3EG
    Phone: 403 720 6637

On Easter Sunday we decided to try Calgary’s abc Country Restaurant for dinner. I didn’t really know where it was, so I called, and the gentleman on the phone was very helpful with directions.

Getting there is actually not difficult. Go south on Deerfoot Trail, take the 24th Street exit, then go east for less than a kilometer. abc Country Restaurant is on the right, just in front of Sobeys.

This Sunday the dinner “rush” was not one at all. When we arrived there were 3 tables occupied, and when we left we were the last ones. Sunday nights are normally busy, they said, but it was Easter Sunday.

Currently abc Country Restaurant is offering a Double Dinner Deal. That’s any 2 entrees (from a selection of 5) and one dessert for $22. The selection of entrees is small but has something for everyone: fish and chips, sirloin steak and mushrooms, chicken strips, quarter BBQ chicken, bacon cheddar steakburger.

We settled on the 1/4 BBQ chicken and the bacon cheddar steakburger. Being fans of sweet potato fries, we substituted them for the wedge fries for an extra $1.99.

Our table had a little sign informing us of the free wireless Internet. You need to ask your server for the password. The Internet access worked like a charm and was a nice bonus.

Our food was served in a timely matter and looked good.

The burger was nice and juicy - just the way I like it - and the cheese and bacon completed the taste package. The bun was fresh and tasty.

The BBQ chicken was good, but there was a bit too much sauce and the BBQ flavor overwhelmed the taste of the meat.

The sweet potato fries came with mayonnaise, a good companion. The fries could have been crispier, but they did taste great.

After devouring the entrees we were salivating for dessert. Believe me, it was goooood. It was much bigger than the picture can show. The brownie was fresh and delicious with vanilla ice cream and 5 mounds of whipped cream. The cook even added 2 pink marshmallow bunnies in honor of Easter. The hot fudge Mount Baker is normally $6.49, so the Double Dinner Deal for $22 is truly great value for money.

The service was great! The staff working at abc Country Restaurant were all good at their jobs and beyond friendly. Even when there was a little misunderstanding about a salad, it was resolved in the blink of an eye.

The ambiance was fresh and warm. Thoughtful decor accents like a miniature lamp at each table and nice art pieces on the walls serve to make you feel at home. There is a mix of booths and tables, so there is a seating arrangement for everyone.

Last thoughts: abc Country Restaurant in Calgary is now officially on the list of places I like. Being in the southeast, it is a little out of my way, but I’ll find a reason to go back and try their other menu items. It’s a great place for a relaxed meal with family and friends!

  • McDonald’s, Horizon
2740 32 Ave NE (see map)
    Calgary AB  T1Y 2S2
    Phone: 403 291 0256

It’s been a while since the last McDonald’s review on this site.

Lunch on a Sunday afternoon brought us to the golden arches. The McDonald’s on 32nd Avenue NE was on our way. It was not overly busy - there was only a group of 6 people in front of us.

A crowd of this size wanting to order food should not pose a challenge for McDonald’s, but this McDonald’s was different. I counted 7 staff members all trying to serve the group of 6, and collectively it took them more than 5 minutes to do so. Then it was our turn. We had a simple order - aside for one side salad to substitute for fries - yet they had to re-inquire 4 times what dressing we wanted. Our choice of dressing was not available at the front counter, so they had to get it from the back.

The Horizon McDonald’s has an older diner look, with darker colors but lots of seating. There is a family seating area, where kids can sit with McDonald’s characters, try the gaming consoles, or play with (very few) blocks at a LEGO table.

Washrooms are a funny thing at this McDonald’s restaurant. In the men’s washroom everything is low. The toilets, the sink, the mirror…they must have expected a lot of young (or really short) customers.

Last thoughts: This McDonald’s is not that great. Service is slow and impersonal. The food is okay, but that’s what you’d expect from any McDonald’s. I think I’ll take a pass on this Horizon location next time.

  • Rogers Plus
    1915 Centre St N
    Calgary AB  T2E 2S7
    Phone: 403 277 7750

As someone who hasn’t rented a movie in years, I had a curious urge to do so last night.

Since I don’t have any active memberships, I could go to any video rental store.

On my way home I passed the Rogers Plus store on Centre Street North. Like any Rogers Plus store, this one  is difficult to miss thanks to the signature red on the store’s exterior.

This Rogers Plus location stocks not only a wide range of rental movies, but also a big selection of DVDs for sale. In a separate section are the video games, also for rental or for sale.

Lastly there’s the mobile phone section, which features Rogers phones and accessories.

I grabbed my movie and went to the counter.

The nice guy at the counter helped me get a membership. It was surprisingly easy - all they needed was a piece of picture ID. They didn’t ask for credit card information, unlike some other video rental outlets.

Last thoughts: I rarely rent movies and it’ll probably stay that way, but my experience at the Rogers store on Centre Street was very positive. They had a huge selection of movies and were very helpful. To frequent renters, I would recommend this Rogers Plus as your neighborhood video store.

  • Inglewood Drive Inn
    802 12 St NE
    Calgary AB  T2G 3H5
    Phone: 403 265 5198

The Inglewood Drive Inn had first caught my eye while I was shopping in this Calgary neighborhood last summer. It’s housed in a humble shack on 12th Street SE, the street that takes you from the Calgary Zoo to the Inglewood area.

Both outside and inside, this restaurant could use some updating. It looks old and shabby. The washrooms, though clean, literally have paint peeling off the walls. Overall, the Inglewood Drive Inn feels plain and devoid of ambiance. It does have a good amount of seating.

Our server was friendly and gave us time to mull over the menu board above the counter. There’s an extensive selection of sandwiches, burgers, sides, shakes, breakfasts, and dinners, so making up your mind can be a challenge.

After ordering you pay at the counter, and this place only takes cash or debit (no credit cards). The food was brought out in about 10 minutes. It was all served on Styrofoam plates, to my chagrin. Paper is okay, but Styrofoam is terrible. I don’t see why the food can’t be served on reusable (not disposable) dishes for customers dining in. It would be much better for the planet and probably cheaper in the long run.

The food was good. My double cheeseburger (only $2.82) was big. The patty was processed rather than homemade, but it was still tasty. My maple milkshake was quite delicious - I would go back for that. My friend got a salmon salad sandwich that she wouldn’t recommend. Think chicken salad but made with canned salmon, which she has made herself with better success than the Inglewood Drive Inn. She should probably have ordered the fish burger instead.

Last thoughts: The Inglewood Drive Inn could get a repeat visit from me, primarily for the milkshakes. The food is good but not “wow”. The place could use some sprucing up and the heater could be set a couple of degrees warmer. If you’re planning to go, note that they are closed on Sundays and only open until 6:30 pm Monday to Saturday.

  • If you’re planning a relaxed evening on the couch, then No Reservations could be the perfect companion.

This movie is about Kate (Catherine Zeta-Jones), who is a top chef and not much else. Her job at the New York City restaurant 22 Bleecker is her whole life, but something happens to change this.

It all starts when Kate unexpectedly becomes the guardian of her niece Zoe (Abigail Breslin). While Kate is adjusting to having the care of a little girl, the restaurant owner hires a new sous-chef, Nick (Aaron Eckhart), to help out in the high-pressure kitchen.

When Kate the perfectionist goes back to work, she is incensed about having lost control of “her” kitchen and feels threatened by Nick’s popularity with “her” staff and boss.

The rest of the movie follows Kate and Nick’s tug-of-war relationship as they clash but become roped into each other’s lives.

Last thoughts: No Reservations is a surprisingly good rom-com with some freshness to the plot. It starts out slow, but the script is good enough to keep you focused until the end. The actor trio of Zeta-Jones, Eckhart, and Breslin (both adorable and credible in her role) really breathe life into the story. At the very least, the food-centric plot will have you yearning for some fine dining.
