• Calgary is a pretty big city on the prairies of Alberta, close to the Rocky Mountains. Unlike most big cities, however, Calgary offers a lot of “green” and great opportunities to get outside and enjoy nature within the city.

When you visit Calgary, you need a good plan to see the city while avoiding car fumes. Thus, I present to you a short but scenic 3-mile (4.8-km) walk that promises great views and lots of relaxation. I’ve also included a route map.

The walk itself is mostly easy, but it does include stairs that are somewhat steep and could be challenging for folks who are not in shape. I thought an ideal starting point would be Eau Claire Market. First, it has cheap parking on weekends and holidays. Second, it has nice shops and a food court, so you can go back there to rest after the walk.

    1. From Eau Claire Market, walk in the direction of the river, then take the foot bridge to Prince’s Island Park. Prince’s Island is a nice little urban park with lots of green. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a coyote.

    2. Keep walking to the Bow River, then take the next foot bridge over the river (and over Memorial Drive). Keep heading towards the hill, which has some mean-looking stairs going all the way up. If you find the stairs too steep, you could walk up the gradual slope and turn left at the top to get to the same endpoint, but this alternate route may not be any easier.

    3. After climbing the stairs, you’ll arrive at a beautiful panoramic view of the city center. On a clear day, you’ll also be treated to a stunning view of the Rocky Mountains.

    4. At the top of the stairs, go right and follow the picturesque skyline for a while, so that you can enjoy multiple views and take lots of pictures. When you stop seeing greenery and start seeing houses, just keep going. After 150 meters, you’ll see another green patch of land on the right. Get on this green patch, which will lead you to another set of stairs. This time the stairs go down (Phew!).

    5. At the bottom, go right and go under the CTrain (Calgary’s LRT) line until you hit the main road (10th Street), then go left and follow the road. This area is called Kensington, and it’s one of Calgary’s treasures, with numerous little shops and restaurants.

    6. Keep following 10th Street until you reach the river again. Now, turn left and you’ll see the CTrain bridge. Take the bridge, because the lower level is for pedestrians.

    7. On the other side of the bridge, turn left and continue walking beside the river while enjoying the view. You’ll eventually end up at the same bridge where you started. Once there, you can head right back to Eau Claire Market.

I hope you enjoy this walk as much as I did. This walk is easy to do at any time of year, and you’ll discover different views as the seasons change.

Below is the route map to help you find your way around. Happy walking!

  • SLABANG is one of the alarm clocks sold by IKEA, and it’s one that I really love. I’ve had mine for years now. Mine is yellow, whereas they sell just the gray ones nowadays.

As you can tell from the picture, the SLABANG is not too big and doesn’t look like much at first glance. That’s where you’d be wrong. The SLABANG is chock-full of great features in a modest little package.

First, the SLABANG does not light up at night, so you can’t see the time in the dark. You might think, “What use is an alarm clock if I can’t see the time?” Think again. The lightless display keeps the bedroom dark to help you sleep better. Then, whenever you want to know the time, just hit the top (the large black button) and the display will light up for a couple of seconds. Smart, isn’t it?

You set the clock time and alarm times by using the small round buttons on the back. Besides the standard alarm ring, you can record different wake-up sounds. Just press the RECORD button, and tomorrow you can wake up to your own voice yelling, “Rise and shine!”.

When the alarm goes off, hit the top and it will snooze for 5 minutes, then the alarm will go off again. If you keep hitting the top, it will keep snoozing, until you turn it off. To turn off the alarm for good, you’ll need to flip the switch on the back of the clock.

The SLABANG is made of a rubbery exterior, which helps it stay nicely in place on any surface. It runs on three AAA batteries, but they should last a long time (1.5 to 2 years, in my experience).

Last thoughts: With the SLABANG, IKEA has made the best alarm clock I’ve ever owned. I really love the dark display feature. It makes my bedroom a lot darker and keeps me from clock-watching while trying to fall asleep. The alarm is loud enough to wake me up every time. For me, SLABANG is the only alarm clock I’d ever want.

  • Second Cup, Sunridge
    3192 Sunridge Blvd NE
    Calgary AB  T1Y 7G6
    Phone: 403 250 3557

After going out for dinner, it seemed fitting to cap the evening with coffee. I went to the nearby Second Cup on Sunridge Boulevard, close to Sunridge Mall and the movie theater. It was around 9 pm and very busy in the coffee shop. The girl who helped me was friendly and efficient. She offered me a cup of Butter Pecan coffee for the same price as plain coffee, because they were out of my first three choices.

I took my coffee to one of the cushy armchairs in front of the fireplace (which was turned off, unfortunately). I was eager to savor the delicious-sounding butter pecan. Alas, the coffee was terrible! Not even cream and sugar could rescue the atrocious flavor. I ended up drinking less than half of it. I just couldn’t stomach any more.

The Second Cup coffee shop itself was prettily decorated and had a warm feel, with earthy colors and framed drawings everywhere, including the washrooms.

Last thoughts: The Sunridge Second Cup is not bad at all, as long as you don’t get the Butter Pecan coffee. I wouldn’t mind visiting this coffee shop again to try a different beverage.

  • Dead Letter Office is a movie centered on Alice (Miranda Otto), who has not been in contact with her dad for as long as she can remember. She always tries to write him a letter, but she does not have an address. Time and time again, the letters come back stamped by the “Dead Letter Office”. Finally, Alice decides to get a job at the Dead Letter Office, thinking it could be her chance to find her dad.

She gets the job and starts working under Frank (George DelHoyo), a fugitive from Chile who runs the Dead Letter Office.

From there, the story goes in all kinds of interesting directions. Funnily enough, you don’t expect much from this film because you heard nothing about it when it was released, but the movie keeps you hooked on the story all the way to the end.

It’s a shame that a movie which won so many awards never really became known to the public. In my humble opinion, Dead Letter Office is a movie you should see.

Last thoughts: I loved this movie. It is filmed with a talented hand, and the filming locations have a special feel. Even the cast look like they belong in an old black-and-white film. Miranda Otto as Alice wears her hair like the actresses in movies from the 50s. Get a copy of Dead Letter Office and find out for yourself what a great movie it is.

  • Merrell Winter Peak boots

The Merrell Winter Peak is a boot made specifically for cold winters. The Winter Peak is made from Polartec 100 and has a temperature rating of -15 degrees Celsius. That said, don’t expect this shoe to be very comfortable in the summer, because then your feet will be very hot inside.

Merrell makes the Winter Peak in two colors: brown and black (black is shown in the photo). This boot is also waterproof. Merrell does not say how they made it waterproof, but it’s certainly not thanks to a Gore-Tex liner.

The shoe has a nose and heel made of rubber, which is good for the usual winter challenges like snow, but the rubber construction also makes the boot feel a bit stronger and more durable. The rest of the shoe, including the upper mesh, is made from Nubuck / Suede or Synthetic, and this material is seamlessly integrated with the rubber nose and heel to make a snazzy-looking upper.

The sole is made by Vibram to give you the comfort and grip you need from a winter hiking boot. For even more comfort, the midsole has an air cushion, and the shoes also come with foam insoles to help you get the perfect comfort level.

I’ve tested the shoe for a couple of weeks now, wearing it as my everyday shoe. It’s very comfortable, not too stiff around the foot, such that it’s easy to drive with. The shoe does not dig into my legs even with things like bending and kneeling. It is definitely waterproof. I can sometimes feel the cold near the boot opening, when the snow is very deep and I’m stepping into it, but not to the extent of feeling really cold. My feet stay happily warm and very comfortable in the Winter Peak even in -25 degrees Celsius.

I should mention that this is my second pair of Winter Peak boots. My first pair (the store’s display model) had a broken lace loop. I wonder if it happened when they pulled off the tags or if it simply broke. It did not happen to this second pair, and Merrell gives a one-year warranty so it shouldn’t become an issue.

Last thoughts: The Merrell Winter Peak seems to be the shoe that will keep me warm all winter. I love the shape and build. It is not too high so it avoids being big and bulky. It’s also lightweight, which helps on long days standing and walking outside. For me, the Merrell Winter Peak will be my trusty winter boot this year and hopefully for years to come.

  • Living with Ed is a TV series about the way Ed Begley lives. You’re wondering: Why is that so special?

Ed is a bit strange compared to most of us. Ed is really into the environment and often takes that to extremes. Of course, his obsession does not sit well with his wife Rachelle. And that is the basis of this reality TV series.

This DVD covers the first season of Living with Ed. In these 6 episodes, you will first meet the Begleys and the way they live. After that you will find out more about solar energy, riding a bike to generate enough electricity to make toast in the morning, and a host of other crazy ideas and projects that Ed has for helping the environment.

Even the DVD box is environmentally friendly. It’s made from paper on the outside and recycled cardboard on the inside, and it works just as well as - maybe even better than - a regular plastic DVD case.

Living with Ed is not really a comprehensive way of learning how to make your life more environmentally friendly, but you will pick up some things, all while laughing a lot. You’ll get some interesting ideas that you may not have thought of yourself.

In general, watching Living with Ed is a nice way to spend short periods of time in front of the TV. the episodes are not very long, and they will inspire you to try new things to help the environment. For that reason, it is time well spent.

Of course, to be truly environmentally friendly, first see if you can borrow this DVD at the library. If not, check out Amazon for a copy of Living with Ed: Season 1, and maybe see if they have a secondhand copy.

Last thought: Living with Ed is a funny really show that makes you think about the enviroment and how you can go to far. It definitly is fun and I am waiting for my library to order season 2

  • The Star Mine Suspension Bridge
    Rosedale AB

The Star Mine Suspension Bridge is just a short drive out of Drumheller (less than 10 km). Leaving Drumheller, take Highway 10 East. When you reach Rosedale, take the first left after crossing the Rosebud Creek. From there it is just another short drive while following the signs.

The suspension bridge was built to get miners over the Red Deer River, but it was not originally in this location. The current bridge was built in 1958 by the government of Alberta, which also maintains it.

On arriving at The Star Mine Suspension Bridge, you find a parking lot with washrooms and plenty of picnic benches. Of course, the main event is crossing the Red Deer River by walking on the 117-meter-long suspension bridge. The bridge is narrow and gets wobbly when many people are on it. On the other side of the bridge, there is not much to see. You could walk around a bit, but don’t expect to linger there.

Last thoughts: Visiting the Rosedale Suspension Bridge is kind of fun. Don’t expect too much, but it costs no money and it’s a great way to stretch your legs after a long drive. Definitely have a look if you’re in the area, and bask in the feeling of standing on a small bridge over a wide river flowing down below.

  • Montana’s Cookhouse
    2555 32 St NE
    Calgary AB  T1Y 7J6
    Phone: 403 735 9270

Montana’s Cookhouse is a chain of restaurants in Canada and the Northern United States. They serve the typical steaks, burgers, and ribs in a rugged-outdoors setting.

To find the Montana’s in the northeast of Calgary, simply look for the movie theater just behind Sunridge Mall. Montana’s is right in the parking lot.

When we got to Montana’s around 7:30 pm on a Friday night, it was busy with a minimum wait of 35 minutes for a table. I was hungry, so I wasn’t about to wait that long. However, we were told we could sit in the bar area, space permitting. It was our lucky night, because we did find a free booth next to the main restaurant. The same menu is available in the bar area, so it was not a big sacrifice, except maybe for the big TVs close by.

A server quickly took our order and the wait began. The wait was much longer than usual at Montana’s, but it was evidently due to the full restaurant.

My Prime Rib Sandwich looked good but was disappointing. The menu states that it’s served on a crusty bun, which to me means a fresh, firm bun. I got my prime rib meat on a soggy old bun. It may have been crusty when it was still fresh-baked (likely the day before). The sandwich tasted okay, although I have a strong feeling that they served me deli meat instead of fresh prime rib. The fries didn’t taste good and were lukewarm, cold by the time I finished by meal. They certainly didn’t come piping hot from the frying oil.

My friend got the Pot Roast with Yorkshire pudding and vegetables. The roast and pudding were also lukewarm, and vegetables were undercooked. Most restaurants overcook vegetables, but raw-tasting ones are just as bad.

Last thoughts: As you can tell, my experience was not that great. If I ever go back to this Montana’s restaurant, I will stay far, far away from the Prime Rib Sandwich.

  • A Christmas Carol
    Theatre Calgary
    www.theatrecalgary.com

Everyone knows and loves the story of A Christmas Carol, the famous novel by Charles Dickens.

The novel is so popular and well known that theater companies all over the world adapt it to the stage every Christmas.

Theatre Calgary in Calgary, Alberta, Canada will run A Christmas Carol from November 21 to December 24, 2008. I went to see their production a week ago, and seeing it ignited my Christmas spirit. I went with a friend whose family sees it together every year.

The Theatre Calgary production of A Christmas Carol is simply magical. The stage is transformed in full detail into the England of Dickens’s time. The costumes and props are a rich and lush visual treat, and the actors are endearing in their roles. Actor Stephen Hair plays Ebenezer Scrooge for the 15th straight year. He brings fullness and depth to the role of the cranky old miser, and his transformation near the end of the play will tug at your heart. You will be smiling from ear to ear.

Last thoughts: A Christmas Carol is a must-see this holiday season. Tickets can be bought for as little as $15 at Safeway. Take your friends and family, and it will be time joyfully spent.

  • Fair’s Fair “For Book Lovers”
    7400 MacLeod Trail S
    Calgary AB  T2H 0L9
    Phone: 403 269 7778

Fair’s Fair is a secondhand bookstore, and they have four stores in Calgary. I went to the one on MacLeod Trail, close to Glenmore Trail and easy to find with lots of parking.

My first impression was that the bookstore looked very organized. The place was spacious and seemed to have a lot of room for future bookshelves. I was greeted with great friendliness by a store associate, then I took a little tour around the store. Fair’s Fair secondhand bookstore offers a huge variety of books from numerous genres, so whatever you’re looking for, you will certainly find it. Aside from books, they also have a section of DVDs (that I personally thought were overpriced) and a section of VHS tapes.

On that Saturday morning there were a fair number of people browsing, and when they had questions the staff were quick to respond.

The store buys and trades books, so if you have a nice collection of books that you’re not using anymore, Fair’s Fair could be interested in them.

Last thoughts: Fair’s Fair on MacLeod Trail is a nice secondhand bookstore offering lots of choice in books. I will definitely think of Fair’s Fair the next time I am looking for something special.
